Grand Jirga Meets in Hangu Today

"HANGU: A 100-member grand Jirga is scheduled to meet today (Thursday) at the office of the district police officer to devise an effective strategy to restore peace in the district.

Sources said that DPO Sajjad Khan called a meeting of the local elders, scholars, religious leaders of both the sects at his office to evolve a strategy to restore lasting peace. Security forces continued patrolling the area after taking its control. The personnel of the law enforcement agencies were also assisting security forces.

Aerial surveillance by the gunship helicopters in the area is being minimised and no firing incident was reported from any part of the district. Also, security forces personnel have occupied the bunkers previously used by the rival groups.

The sources said there was no relaxation in the curfew in the main town of the district and all the educational institutions, offices and banks remained closed. Meanwhile, the provincial government commenced a polio vaccination drive in other parts of the district, as it could not be started in Hangu due to the volatile security. It merits a mention here that the authorities had directed the hospital employees and other staff to remain on duty round-the-clock to handle any emergency, but the staff failed to go to the hospital due to curfew. On the other hand, the Kohat-Hangu Road also remained closed sinc"
