Diagnosis Codes Multiply in ‘Nightmare’ for Providers

Diagnosis Codes Multiply in ‘Nightmare’ for Providers: "The number of codes for medical billing will grow to more than 155,000 from 17,000, creating a “nightmare” for hospitals and doctors seeking reimbursement.

The U.S. government’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will release a final rule this week boosting the number of available diagnosis codes for use in billing and tracking diseases, Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said in an interview today. Health providers will have to use the codes to be paid by the government or private insurers."
